Driver's Licensing in New Zealand
19-11-2018, 08:49 PM
This post specifically applies sa driver’s license ng light motor vehicles, or sa classification ng New Zealand Transport Agency, ito yung Class 1.
If you have a Philippine driver’s license, you can use it for driving in New Zealand for one year (provided hindi expired ang license mo). Ang reckoning date will be the day you arrived in New Zealand, hindi yung day na unang beses kang nagmaneho.
In many instances, isa yan sa mga “plus” points ng job applicant, if not given as a strict requirement dun sa mga job vacancies. Isa pa, bukod sa passport, I consider yung driver’s license as the national ID ng NZ.
Yung supervisor, kailangan full license holder for at least two years. Yung restricted naman, as the name implies, restricted in some ways. Though may mga endorsements na like yung P endorsement which allows you to drive yung mga pampasahero like taxi. You can find more information about driving classes here.
When driving in New Zealand, ang ultimate resource for information is the New Zealand Road Code. You can buy it in printed book form, which I strongly recommend. I think it costs $25. You can buy it sa PaperPlus, Whitcoulls, AA Business Centres, and sa Councils (sa ngayon yan lang ang alam ko).
Kung ready ka na kumuha ng driver’s license, may mga online resources na available to get you started:
Being a learner
How to do a three point turn
How to reverse park
How to pass the NZ restricted licence test
How to pass the NZ full licence test
Critical errors in the restricted and full licence test
You can find more useful NZ driving videos in the New Zealand Drive Youtube Channel.
Ito naman ang links for online exams. You can also find sample test at the back of the Road Code (yung printed book form) More Information and Practical Tips:
Personally, I think it’s much easier to take the full license exam kaysa dun sa restricted exam. Pero pareho mo yung dadaanan kung dito ka sa New Zealand magsisimulang kumuha ng license (from learners, then restricted, tapos full). First, mas matagal yung restricted driving test, kaya yung period of time and chance mo to commit errors, mas mahaba. Yung full license is about 30 minutes or even less. Then sa restricted, you have to perfectly execute yung three-point turn and parallel parking. Walang ganoon sa full license test.
Having said that, I prefer na kumuha na lang muna ng license sa Pilipinas, then ipa-convert na lang pagdating dito. With the conversion, you won’t undergo sa restricted driving test, full license test agad (given na maipasa mo yung theory test). Though pag naipasa mo yung theory test, you will be given a full license with supervisor condition, technically parang learners din kasi me supervisor. In addition, pag nakuha mo yung full license mo, there will be no endorsement as to what type (manual or auto) yung pwede mong i-drive. Kung dito ka sa New Zealand kasi magstart from learners up to full, kung automatic ang ginamit mong sasakyan sa practical test, yun lang ang pwede mong idrive (di pwede ang manual) pag nakuha mo ang lisensya mo.
Kung may extra funds ka and time to have a practical driving lesson, go for it. Kahit na magaling ka ng magdrive sa Pilipinas, yung lesson will introduce you to the “actual” exam. Mas ok kung yung practical driving na gagawin nyo will be done kung saang area mo rin balak kumuha ng driving test. Another thing, psychologically beneficial yung naglesson ka, your brain may be conditioned to become confident and positively, yung thinking mo na papasa will be much stronger.
Always refer to the New Zealand Road Code. Usually yung bad driving habits sa Pilipinas yung dahilan kaya may mga Pinoys na bumabagsak sa exam. Take time to read, understand, and practice when you drive kung ano ang mga nasa Road Code.
